Adobe officially announced the launch of Adobe Creative Suite 5 ( Adobe CS5 ), coming out on April 12th, 2010!

In about 19 days we will learn all about Adobe’s Creative Suite 5. You can sign up for the unveiling and watch a timer at Adobe’s launch site, Announcing Adobe CS5! Join for the exclusive Global Online Launch Event, Monday, April 12, 2010.
Before you get too excited, let’s get one thing straight: This is the unveiling, or basically an introduction to the public. Adobe is going so far as to call it a “launch” day but you will not be able to buy the software that day. Adobe has not announced a release day yet, but October 2010 makes sense to me (just a guess). This would position Adobe for a strong end to the calendar year, it would give them sufficient time to work on it after the April introduction, and it lines up exactly two years after the release of CS4. That said September/November would make just as much sense, and some rumors are putting the date earlier, noting an 18 month release cycle.

    Adobe, DO NOT TEASE.

I’m hoping they come out with finite information about the suites offered, pricing, upgrade eligibility, etc.

As much as I love Adobe, they really need to update their hosting platform to handle the load they get.

    Adobe, GIMME GIMME GIMME!

They did it with CS4, yeah. And it wasn’t that much of a time lag.

I’d say it’s about May~June. Probably not June, that’s when Office 2010 comes out, and people will probably delay buying CS5 if things go that way. (Talking about people who buy both, of course)

No app-killing this time, please. CS4 slaughtered Ultra and Stock Photos. Better yet, new app? Maybe Flash Catalyst bundled?

I hope they don’t go for a October release again. I think it works against them, as no educational institution wants to upgrade their computers in the middle of the semester, or even year for that matter. Better to release in the summer when budgets are fatter and fiscal accountability seems further away for account managers.

The last thing you want is every educational institution in the country collectively skipping this upgrade.

If this will be of any help – from March 24th:

Roy: Hello, how can I help you?

David: Will CS5 suites be available for purchase on the April 12th release date?

Roy: That’s not the actual ship date. On April 12 you can join us online to have a first look at CS5 by registering now.

Roy: We’re sorry, we do not have accurate information on ship date of CS5 products.

David: So if I purchased a CS4 suite now I would still have to pay an upgrade fee for CS5?

Roy: Well, there may be a better upgrade price to CS5 from CS4. Also, CS4 is compatible with all the latest platforms. I recommend that you go for CS4 now so that you can kick start your project rightaway.

I seriously doubt that Adobe’s going to wait more than another month after the “unveiling” to release it.

Adobe’s CEO has stated that CS5 will ship about four weeks after the launch announcement. This is consistent with past practices.

It would be insane to announce in April and ship in October. I have no clue how the owners of this site even came up with that idea.

I agree that it makes no sense to announce in April to release in October. It’s not like Windows which needs that kinds of time to build hype.

Adobe in the past has announced product and released a month later. Mid May would make more sense. I doubt they would stick to the 18 month cycle to just release in October.

Not to mention Adobe just released Flash Builder 4 on March 22nd. Hard to think they would push out a new applictaion that is part of the Flash platform and have the rest of the family not come out for another 6 months.

Arghhhh! A few days ago I purchased a full version of CS4 Design Premium. I haven’t even installed it yet and today I read that CS5 will be out in 2 weeks!!!

Will I receive an upgrade when it is available?

I would really like the option to disable some of the new window designs from CS4. Premiere and other programs have the normal Windows design, but Dreamweaver and Photoshop have their own thing going on, which is annoying for me because I can’t use Aero Snap on them, which I use a lot in graphic design.

Adobe: A good time to upgrade from Creative Suite 1
Adobe introduced a “three versions back” cutoff policy for upgrades

Adobe Systems has hinted, or rather not hinted, it is a good time to think about upgrading from Creative Suite 1.In a blog post, John Nack, Principal Product Manager, Adobe Photoshop at Adobe writes: “If you own a product from the first generation of the Creative Suite (e.g. Photoshop CS, released in 2003) and want to be able to upgrade it to a more recent version, now’s a good time to pull the trigger.”Nacks adds while he is “not hinting about the possible timing of future releases,” Adobe introduced a “three versions back” cutoff policy for upgrades around two years ago, which means you can upgrade from CS, CS2, or CS3 to the current version CS4.”When the current version goes up by one, so will the cutoff for upgrades. Therefore if you’re holding onto a copy of CS and may want to upgrade it at some point, well, you shouldn’t wait too long.”Adobe normally releases a new version of its flagship Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, every 18 months or so, which suggests CS5 is likely to be with us sooner than later.

@ steamed: I made the same mistake when I bought Photoshop CS2. Got the CS3 release email the next day :) grrr. So this time I’ve been patiently holding off buying CS4, waiting for a CS5 announcement. Phew, the wait is over :)

I saw on another site that Flash CS5 is officially released in May; so I too have no idea where this October idea came from … flying in the face of reason to stir up controversy perhaps?

@ Alyosha, I see no point anyone upgrading from CS1 just to then buy another upgrade to CS5. I’m pretty sure it would be cheaper to just wait and buy CS5 at full price! (A CS1->CS4 upgrade was way more expensive than CS3->CS4 last time I checked. Sounds like Adobe’s sales department trying to scare people into spending money at a time when nobody is upgrading due to waiting for CS5 LOL)

New Photoshop features seem very promising, but… my real concern is the upgrade price. I didn’t buy the CS4 package because at the same time when the economy went down the drain and I lost many clients, Adobe raised the upgrade price with 20%. I thought it was not fair so skipped it.

Announce it in April but don’t sell until October? Are you nuts? Nobody is going to buy CS4 after CS5 is announced, so Adobe would shoot itself in the foot.

How quickly do the academic versions generally become available after the main release? I’m about to buy CS4 at school, but I’ll be there until August, and the new features might be enough to get me to wait if I thought I might be able to get CS5.

Adobe Products are great but one thing that most people didn’t realize is that when it comes to speed, installing the package is tediously slowwww…….unlike…3D programs like Cinema 4D and Autodesk 3ds max, they didn’t take that long to install the whole package…
maybe that’s why photoshop and premiere pro consume a huge amount of all the CPU and RAM…

My point is, just keep in mind, that when u got CS5…see if CS5 products take longer than the previous verson to install it. i bet they wouldn’t do any improvement in CS5…in terms of Speed and Performance for cheaper Ssytems..

Justtt Keep in My what i have mentioned..KK?

I would like to use some Adobe aplications in my Linux Box . . . what a mess, I know the demand is shy, but look for WineHQ page, there are millions of people that don’t emigrate from Windows to Linux, because there’s no Linux Installation Programs . . there are not so different as Mac. Why is this resistence xD?

This is just my 2 cents. I got an email about a month ago with a discount offering students a $50 rebate on the CS4 suite. That is the day before the cutoff date soooo…I don’t know if it is entirely unreasonable that it will come out a month later and free upgrades to CS5 will start being offered on April 12th. Just MHO.

So historically, the prices of new versions are higher than the prices of the previous versions, at least after the launch of the new version?

Like if I can get a CS4 suite now at $1000, when CS5 ships, it will likely be higher, not just replacing CS4 at the same price point.

There is just no way Adobe will wait till October to release. Not when they unveil in April. That would be months and months of stagnant, actually, NO sales. They’ll probably release it within a few weeks of the unveiling. I’ll be waiting myself. I couldn’t get a straight answer out of the Adobe chat people as to whether or not I’d qualify for a free upgrade if I purchased CS4 now. Sounds to me like they have something to hide, most notable, NO free upgrade to 5 if you purchase 4 now. If the case were otherwise, they’d be using that as a MAJOR selling feature of CS4.

The unveiling will probably shed light on whether CS4 owners will get a free upgrade to CS5. My guess is that anyone buying CS4 after the unveiling will get a free upgrade.

The chat people gave me the run-around regarding free upgrades to CS5 if I bought CS4 today (April 8). The telephone order people said they couldn’t tell me for sure when the “official” release announcement was (saying the announcement on the 12th was just an “unveiling” and “introduction”), but emphasized the if I bought CS4 direct from Adobe, I could return it and get my money back “for any reason whatsoever” for 30 days. When I asked if that meant that if I didn’t qualify for the free upgrade to CS5 during that 30 days I could return CS4 and get my money back, then repurchase so I could get the free upgrade, he repeated the mantra: “Buy CS4 (from Adobe, direct) and you can return it for ANY reason for 30 days.”

So that’s how I’m handling it. Free upgrade in that 30-day window, fine. No? Then they get it back, and I buy again–either CS5 or for the free upgrade (assuming there’s been an “official” announcement by that time–Adobe’s trigger for free upgrades).

I’ve just bought a new computer with Windows 7, only to already find out I may have trouble trying to install/use my CS2. I’ve found some instructions on how to possibly get it installed, but may consider upgrading to CS5. My current software is CS2 Premium (Student Licensing version). Can anyone tell me if it’s possible to upgrade from a student version, or would I have to buy a full version?

NYst84me – I upgraded to full version CS3 from a student license of a previous version (I forget if it was CS or CS2) with no problems.

Before buying the upgrade I called them up and asked to make sure it would be ok, you may want to wait until the CS5 launch is announced and do the same.

For those that are “hoping” or “assuming” you will get a free upgrade to CS5 if you buy CS4 now, are you kidding? Have you ever used Adobe products in the past? I just purchased CS4 today through the reseller that I have used for my last purchases (CS1 & CS3) because on their website they advertised a free upgrade to CS5 upon its’ release.

I rung them and I rung Adobe and both confirmed it’s true (that’s here in Australia). All I have to do is send proof of purchase to Adobe and I was told they will ship a CS5 disc to me for no charge. Good stuff!

Looking forward to CS5 – all looks worth the wait!

I just spoke with someone from Adobe, and anyone who purchases CS4 on or after April 12 will be eligible for a free upgrade. All you’ll need to do is call Customer Service once CS5 is released and provide them with proof of purchase (order number and date, etc).
